Decking

When building a new deck few decisions will be as important as the choice of decking material that will be used. The type of decking you select will have an impact on the appearance, cost, time of construction, fastener, and maintenance of your new deck. If your decision criteria is based only on initial cost the decision is simple: pressure treated lumber. However if life cycle cost, appearance, time of construction, or ease of maintenance are also factors that you want to consider, then the decision becomes more complicated. We offer many style of decking.  Each with it's own advantages and disadvantages.  Which is best for you?  Ask two different deck builders the same question, and you will probably get two different answers.  Schmidt Fence & Deck does not build or install decks we only sell material.  If you would like to have a deck built please see our recommended contractors.

Composite
By definition a composite is a material, in which two or more distinct, structurally complementary substances are combined  to produce a product with structural or functional properties not present in any individual component. In the case of composite decking the primary components are most often a plastic and an organic material, usually wood fiber. Composite decking has come a long way in the last few years.  It used to be available in only one color (grey) and one texture (smooth).  The selection and variety have grown greatly.  You can now get decking in colors like "Tropical Walnut" and "Tigerwood" with deep embossed wood grain textures.  With the changes in the product line composites have gained significant market share. The advantages of composite decking are wide variety of colors and textures, low maintenance (not "maintenance free"), rot and decay resistant, boards are uniform in shape which makes them easy to work with, less waste due to material defects, and splinter free.  With the good comes the bad.  Most composite fade over time, stain when food or drink is spilled, are heavier that most other decking, and scratch easily from moving furniture, or pets.

EverGrain Composite Decking

To create even more beauty and distinction, begin your deck project with EverGrain composite decking.  As the only composite decking material made with a compression molding process, EverGrain has deep lasting grain with outstanding durability.  EverGrain decking requires not staining or painting, and is available in seven beautiful colors to perfectly complement and home.

TimberTech

With an array of decking profiles, three railing systems, & fencing, TimberTech makes it easy to maximize your outdoor living area.  TimberTech products are a revolutionary alternative to traditional wood--they don't rot, warp or splinter--and they look great year after year.  And unlike wood, TimberTech products require no painting, staining or sealing.

PVC/Vinyl
Demand for ultra-low-maintenance vinyl/PVC decking came from homeowners who told their contractors what they really wanted: resistance to staining, scratches and abrasion, weather, fading, mold, and mildew.  These are problems with all other types of decking. We believe this is the next generation in decking.  Vinyl/PVC decking has improved in many ways in recent years. There are now more color choices and there are several surface textures available. The advantages are stain, fade, and  scratch resistance, very low maintenance, light weight, dimensionally stable, sliver free, relatively cool to the touch, and clean uniform appearance.  The disadvantages are higher cost than other decking choices, and color choices are usually light shades.

Azek Deck The #1 brand in stain resistant decking, is a superior decking option.  Refining and redefining the very notion of building a deck.  Engineered with Procell Technology, AZEK Deck virtually eliminates the shortfalls associated with wood and composite decking.
LIBERTY DECK

An excellent choice with Classic Wood grain finish & slip-resistant grip.  No need to worry about uneven boards or exposed nails--the Liberty Deck system provides 2 channel strips that conceal all screws & fasteners.

Wood
Pressure treated lumber is the dominate decking product in the market today. Relatively low cost, excellent strength and workability characteristics, and wide availability are responsible for its popularity. Even if you select another decking material you will almost certainly still have pressure treated lumber used for all or most of the structural members. The advantages of pressure treated decking is the low initial cost, easy to work with, takes paint and stain well, and excellent structural value.  Cedar although more expensive, shares many of these advantages along with the wow factor that newly installed and properly finished cedar deck brings.  Both pressure treated and cedar decking have many of the same disadvantages.  Both weather to a silver/grey color without annual cleaning and sealing, are susceptible to weather checking and slivers, stain easily, are relatively soft and the surfaces get quite hot in the summer sun.  On average 10 to 15 years  is how long people tell us they have had their wood deck when they are looking to replace it with something that requires less maintenance.

PRESSURE TREATED

The most economical choice in decking material.  It's initial greenish color fades to gray if not stained or sealed.

CEDAR

Cedar is naturally resistant to decay.  It is relatively soft & quick to weather to a silvery gray color.  It makes for a beautiful deck with regular treating/sealing.
